Reasons Backing Some Superstitious Beliefs

Blogadda Tangy Tuesday Picks

Call them Superstitions, old wives tales or anything else, there are some sayings or rituals which become such an integral part of our lives that we keep on following and passing them on generation to generation.

Being modern does not always mean that we simply refuse to abide by certain rituals. At the same time, following them blindly is also not the only option. Some time back I posted some of very common superstitious beliefs and the reason behind them - Following Traditions may also be Modern

Below are some more rituals which actually had a reason behind them and not all of them are valid now.

Bathe after attending a funeral ceremony
"Do not touch anything and go straight to bathroom cleaning yourself and the clothes", almost all of us would have heard this from our mother or someone else. It's just a mere superstition that coming back from a funeral is a bad omen or attracts spirits.
The real reason is more logical and scientific. Dead bodies, similar to people having communicable diseases might cause infection. Adding on to this, the dead bodies gradually starts to decompose thus creating bacteria. Thus is is always advisable to take a bath and wipe of the contagious diseases. Plus, unlike lucky us, our ancestors did not have vaccination against many deadly and contagious diseases. Therefore, they made this rule which is now followed blindly in the name of ritual and spirits.

Wait for a while if a cat crosses your path
People get chilled to their bones if they see a cat crossing their path. If the cat happens to be black, it is considered even worse.
Here is the story behind this: In the times, when there were few means of transport, people used to travel at night and by bullock carts. While passing by a forest (which were not a rare district unlike today), some ferocious animal like leopard, panther or a lion could cross the path. No one would like to risk their lives by going nearer to them. Hence, better wait for a while and let them go. They obviously looked black in no or moon light.  Thus came the concept of black.
Also, as the eyes of animals usually glows in dark, the oxes or cows got scared knowing that a dangerous animal is ahead. It is difficult to control an already scared animal.
For god's sake, please spare the poor cats and the black ones are clearly the victim of racisim.

Unlucky numbers - 3 and 13
"Teen Tigada Kaam Bigada" is very common phrase. I am yet to see a hotel with room number 13 or a lift with floor number 13. These numbers are considered unlucky all over the world. Well, as they say, 'Everything happens for a reason', there are stories behind these numbers also.
Number 3: "Three on a match" has the basis from wars. It is believed that when the first soldier lit his cigarette, enemy from other end can see the spark ()No smoke with out a spark). If the second soldier continues to lit his cigarette, the enemy can easily be sure and aim at the target. In case, the third ones flows in, the enemy side can now be dead- sure and shoot. Cigarette smoking is not only dangerous to health but to the nations also!
Unlucky 13: The actual reason behind this is that as the religion stories says, that there were 13 people present at the table when Jesus had his last supper. one among them was a betrayer ad led to the death of living god. Thus, the number is termed unlucky. But still, the followers of Jesus dreading this number is still understood to a level. What about other religions?

Make a wish while throwing coin in holly river
This is another common sight all over the world.  Well, it might not make the wish come true, but was definitely useful for people drinking water from those water bodies.
In ancient times, people used to drink water direct from rivers and other sources. The sources of water thus became precious and slowly turned holly.
Coming to the coins, have you ever heard that keeping water in a copper container overnight and drinking it in morning is good for health? Bingo! In ancient times, coins were made of copper. Rivers being the source of drinking water  specially ones which had copper coins for long in it were less infected with bacteria and became useful for those who drank it.
Now, when the coins are no loner made of copper and to top it, we have water purifiers, this practice does not make sense any more. More over, we have polluted our so called holly water, that the sight of them make our noses stink forget drinking.

Sneezing while leaving is unlucky
When we sneeze, we loose our control over ourselves for a fraction of seconds. Thus, it is not safe for the person to walk at that moment. He/she might bump in others too. Thus making it unsafe for others as well.

Sitting between the door is not good
This is another safety measure which has taken the form of baseless superstitions. It is not advisable to sit in between the doors or beams, because in case of any natural calamities, they tend to break and form an inverted triangle increasing the chances to hit and cause injuries.

Go on a fast and bribe the god
All of us have seen this in almost all religions. Well, fasting once in a while pleases the god or not, it would sure clean the digestive system and is good for health. Fasts in modern times can also be called fruit diet to detoxify the body.

The moment we are aware of real reasons behind common beliefs and practices, they start making some sense. some wise man very truly said - "Half knowledge is more dangerous than none".

Wannabe Chetan Bhagat? Why not consider your own name?

Blogadda's Tangy Tuesday Pick

What do I feel about Chetan Bhagat books?

I don't love his books, but I do not dislike them as-well. I know it takes hell lot of effort to write a story and convert that into a book. I am trying to write one non-fiction and must admit that I am very-very bad at it. Have only written 10 pages in more than a year. Thus, there is no piece of writing i can ever dislike - forget hate.
I agree that most of his books roam around similar concept and might be targeted to a certain set of audience. So what? All writers do the same. I started reading Nicholas Sparks and fell in love with his romantics till I ended up predicting one of his stories right from beginning. That does not mean i do not like him any more. I still love his stories - so what if all make 2 people fall in love over overnight and have mouth watering love making scenes, his love letters still make me go week into my knees.
Even everyone does not like Shakespeare or Charles Dickens. To be frank, not everyone can understand their writing, forget liking it.
In short, I personally feel neutral towards Chetan Bhagat books and have enjoyed reading them. He does not come in my favourites but i have no reasons to not call him a writer.

Why did I read Chetan Bhagat books?

Five Point someone - The book was lying on the bed of one of girls in my PG. I asked her how is it and she said 'awesome". I borrowed it and could immediately relate to most of the instances specified being an engineering student. To be honest, i have some non-engineer friends and they can not relate to it in any sense.

One Night at Call Centre - The book came just after i finished above. Was a hit in market and i again had it free of cost via my PG. I was almost clueless about my views on the book. It was bit funny - i was smiling at almost all twists.

Three Mistakes of my life - I absolutely have no idea about why i picked this book. May be because i again saw it with my Chetan Bhagat fan PG mate. I hated the way violence and blood shedding is written in this book. Otherwise, it was ok.

2 States - Having read three of his books, i was fascinated by his real life experiences. Who in the world would not like to read/hear true love stories. Whenever we have a love marriage around us, we are curious to know the details especially if it was opposed by parents initially. All famous love stories lie on same plot - Couple trying to unite while everyone else around them pulls them away (Romeo-Juliet, Laina-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha... too much, ok - kayamay se kayamat tak, Raja Hindustani, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Maine Pyar Kiya, Veer-Zara, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jodha Akbar...).

Never now I may end up reading others as-well.

What makes Chetan Bhagat so popular?

Without any personal comments, I find below five points as an answer to this:
1. Marketing - "jo dikhta hai wo bikta hai' (that which is seen is sold). Chetan bhagat has used his learning from nation's top institute to the best use of it.
2. Candy-floss Romance - unexpected love stories and jaw dripping sexual fantasies (Professor's daughter (his own house and shirt), Friend's sis (rooftop during tuition timings), Somebody's girlfriend)
3. The Language - While his writing skills have varied views and has been criticized very badly in many forums, there is no denying that irrespective of flaws etc., it's damn easy. Even a kid can read and understand every word of it.
4. Plot/Setting - Dream colleges/institutes(IIT, IIM), riots, forbidden fruit (best friend's sister) etc..
5.Social Status - PM Modi stands up and adjusts the mike for a lady or beats drums on his foreign trip and it becomes headline of next day's newspaper. Similarly, a famous writer writes a column on current topic of discussion or his the new film on his book kicks off, it will make a news. we have a short memory span and our little brain needs regular reminders. Chetan Bhagat makes sure people remember him regularly. The good thing is he does this positively. Not everyone can keep everyone happy - He just put his thoughts in media and accepts all criticism - positive and negative.

What do the other lesser known talented Indian writers need to do to get the same recognition?

It's a million dollar question which sadly has no specific answer, at-least i have not been able to find one. If the writer is really talented, he/she doesn't need a 5 pointer.
1. Get into IIT and then IIM.
2. Have the guts to write that story and market it so well.
3. Don't have a love story? Don't worry - not everyone gets the most popular in college. Run your imagination - Create a plot to either make readers LOL or make them turn their eyes red in tears.
4. Get those newspaper/magazine columns selected and printed
5. Be yourself!!!

LOL

This Post is a Tangy Tuesday Pick

How many times do we see a bunch of people at a park, doing Laughter yoga or Hasyayoga?
I am sure everyone in their lifetime has seen some one or a bunch of people laughing for no reason. Why do they do it? How do they do it?

Why? Because, either they are actually laughing or they are trying to tickle a laugh.
How? Ha ha ha, hu hu hu, ho ho ho, he he he... It would be easier if done in group when everyone makes an eye-contact. I bet, it doesnot take longer for the fake laughter to become real.

As per Wikipedia, "Laughter yoga (Hasyayoga) is a practice involving prolonged voluntary laughter. Laughter yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter"

I have always said that my favourite quote is "Keep smiling". A smile is generally followed by a laugh. Believe me, comedian act Laughter Milton Berlet was so true to say - "Laughter is an instant vacation." So true it is. Isn't it? After all, what is a vacation? Vacation is the time when we are true to ourselves. It's the period when we feel relaxed and happy. That's exactly laughter brings to us.

Did you know that all animals laugh? Yes it's very true. I read somewhere that Laughter and joy are not unique to humans, the study says. Ancestral forms of play and laughter existed in other animals long before humans began cracking up.

So, if animals can do it, why can't we? After all, we are the mighty creation of god. I hope i have made a decent attempt to make you laugh or at least smile. If not, let me try and give some benefits of laughing.
  1. Favourable Hormones Benefits:
    • Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline), Endorphins, dopamine and growth hormone.
    • Endorphins make us feel happier and less stressed. They are also called natural pain killers.
  2. Good for lungs:
    • Laughing expands the lungs, stretches the muscles in the body and stimulates homoeostasis.
  3. Good for heart;
    • Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
  4. Helps make abs:
    • A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works out the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed afterwards.
  5. Helps Socialize:
    • Smiling is an attractive expression, which is more likely to draw people to you rather than push them away. "Hasi to phasi..;)". Believe me, if I smile at an unknown person, he/she may make strange face at the very moment. But the person would definitely widen his/her lips a bit later on thinking the worst possible thing about you – ‘So stupid!”.
    • Laughter brings the focus away from anger, guilt, stress and negative emotions in a more beneficial way than other mere distractions.
    • Laughter connects us with others. It is said that smiling/laughter is contagious.
  6. Can’t Laugh, no problem:
    • Faking a smile or laugh works as well as the real thing—the brain doesn't differentiate between real or fake as it interprets the positioning of the facial muscles in the same way.

So, go ahead and Laugh Out Loud… :D

LOL...;)

How often you LOL? Would you laugh more after reading it? Your reply may make me smile. Put your laugh in comments.
