Z is for Zoology

Well, I tried hard searching for this occupation in India, but there hardly seems any notables. So, this post goes on to recognize some of kind hearted women who fought for animals rights.

Rukmini Devi Arundale
Popularly known for her classical dance achievements, Rukmini also had another side worth noting. She had a soft corner for all kind of creatures and was also an animal right activist. It was under her leadership in 1962 when The Animal Welfare Board of India was set up. She was a pure vegetarian and promoted same everywhere.
The Animal Welfare Board of India presented her with ‘Prani Mitra’ award in 1968 for her work as an animal rights activist.

Anuradha Sawhney
Anuradha has served as the head of operations of People for the Ethical Treatment of animals (PETA), India for nine years. Apart from this, she was also the Editor of the Indian edition of the animal rights magazine Animal Times. PETA India received several awards under her leadership.
She received following awards for her work as an animal lover:
·         Women's achievement award, 2009
·         Ranked as one of India's 50 most powerful women by Femina magazine

Anuradha was not a vegetarian by childhood and opted to become one when she joined PETA. Now, she encourages other people to turn into a vegetarian and has also launched her own vegan cookbook called The Vegan Kitchen Bollywood Style.

Apart from these two ladies, there are several other ladies and of-course gentlemen who are doing the noble cause to help poor animals in their own small efforts. People offering food to stray dogs  or cows (not the rich ones, I have also seen a fruit seller who used to get milk and chapattis for stray dogs daily) is a common sight. I am not a vegetarian myself, but still salute the efforts pf these selfless souls.

Y is for Yo-Yo : Yo Yo Rapper Girl

Rap song – they are the most trending ones in present era. The rappers have a traditional image of boys being dressed ultra-casually with big chains and hand bands as accessories. The image is certainly changing with time. Pretty girls are making their mark in the field at a slow but steady pace.

Hard Kaur
The first name which popes up when it comes to female rapper in India. Hard Kaur’s, real name is Taran Kaur Dhillon and she is popularly known as India’s first female rap singer. Her personal life has been a struggle right from her childhood. She lost her father at a young age and her mother had to return to her parents because of her burnt and lost beauty salon and nagging in-laws. Even when she moved to US, she had to face discrimination pertaining to her accent. Little did those naggers knew that this very accent would prove her USB one day.
Her first huge it was “ek glassy” which is my personal favorite too.  There is hardly any party which is complete with this peppy number.  Since then she has been part of large collection of hits in Bollywood movies.
What’s more? The girl has even worked with the hip-hop band D-12 of king of rap – Eminem.

Deane Sequeria
I know many people might not know the name. Let me try and reframe it. Heard the song Bezubaan  from ABCD – Any Body Can Dance? The rap portion of song was sung by 15 year old girl called Deane Sequeria. She definitely has the potential and also dreams to become a professional rapper. The rap – “Chaka Laga” for the IPL T20 also belongs to this kid. Her first solo rap song has been written, composed and sung all by herself.
The girl has acclaim of being youngest rapper from India.
