Brushing Teeth For Kids - Dental Hygiene - How to Make a Teeth Model or Denture at Home

Continuing with our homeschooling projects, in this post, I am sharing about Oral Hygiene and importance of brushing.

Encourage and help children to create a model or denture of teeth. Only the lower jaw should be enough.

Once the model is set, try to add a few sample cavities and food items model.

Just have a general discussion with the children around teeth, cavities, reason for cavities, ways of preventing them, how to brush etc.

Children are sure going to enjoy the activity and learn better as they visualize the details.

Here is our video for the activity.

We created the model of teeth with Legos at home (we did not have a pink one for mouth, so we used some water colors for it as that could be washed off later). Below are other items that can be used for making the model:

Beads

Small paper cups

Marshmallows

Used bottle caps

Corn kernels

The beauty of learning which is lead by children themselves is that it stays with them longer and they grasp more than we teach them via textbooks and lectures.

Do let us know if you try this at home. Also, it would be awesome to get any new ideas for the model – that would be beneficial for others also.

Thanks for reading and happy learning.

Early Discovery Series by Britannica

Britannica Early Discovery is a collection of six little hardcovered books I picked up from a book stall once set up in my office premises. Below are the books which are there in our box:

Early Discovery Words
Early Discovery Colours
Early Discovery Just For fun
Early Discovery Shapes
Early Discovery Sounds
Early Discovery Numbers

The kiddo was in playgroup when we got it and I think we started with Colours – which he was already comfortable with at that time. We gradually moved to Sounds – fun to play with kids and Shapes. Numbers, Just For Fun and Words then followed the suite.

The books are full of colorful pictures to make the child understand the concepts along with a small question or a to do task on almost each page.

The second last page includes a ‘Glossary’ of key words introduced in the book along with their description.

Hold on, there is more. The last page has a few fun ways to learn the concept. The fun ways give an idea to the parents on how can they incorporate the learning in day to day life without actually making the child realize.

I would not say that’s this is among the favorite book of kiddos, but yes, they do enjoy reading them occasionally. Thus, although it costed a bit, but was all the worth.

He who opens a school door, closes a prison-Victor Hugo

There is one place on earth which is given equal or may be higher importance than heaven - School. Some call it - "the temple of learning".
The famous poet Victor Hugo said that "He who opens a school door, closes a prison.".  It is a phrase which makes different sense to different people. almost all the meanings which people derive out of it are in a positive light.
Looking at the present condition of schools and all the raised voices, this is one line which can be interpreted in a completely negative sense.

Two hearts, deep down, prepare for the worst
Feeling the numbers and calling countless first
Their world is blessed, as the world blesses them
Soon they’d be parents, for the life readies them

The foremost cry lead to most awaited smile

Crawls and falls, and first steps of hit and trail
Gibberish mumbles turning to words like mom
Growing so fast, recognizing family and home

She wanted to grow but Oh No! Not so like that
Like he promised to not be a trouble, or be a brat

But such inevitable distress they had to face
Separation and strangers, they had to brace
It was a new beginning with gleam of dreams
As the sun is elemental with rays of streams

That phase for angel was hideous but has gone
Now my angel is more subtle for the fear is born
The smile has returned as the life changes gears
Yet lies unanswered are those prayers of fears

The temple of education is thought as a school
A school of thought – It’s a sham, you fool!
When cry of separation turns to wail and yelp
To you and your child – Will there be any help?

Help like security of safety of the child
From teachers, helpers or just a beguiled
God help those who help themselves
Is a quote for adults as kids are elves!

If he - The Creator - has another first under the hood
What would my angel do with the blessed parenthood! ?
My angel’s life would be unfair but as he is always true,

Slayer too would be angelic as he put its misery through

Am I wrong when I feel that the brilliant words from Mr. Hugo mean that "When we leave our children at the school entrance and bid them goodbye kisses, we might be sending them to a prison? A prison which might enlighten their insights but at the same time, has become another dreaded place to leave them alone. But then, do we have a choice?"

PS: Honestly, I wrote a rough draft straight of my heart on this topic and then sent it over to my free of cost editor - Mak - my brother. Like always, he did a fabulous job of editing but this time, he returned with almost new version taking the idea, feelings and some lines from my writing. All the credit goes to him for this one!!!

Letters from a Father to his Daughter by Jawaharlal Nehru

Book Title:- Letters from a Father to his Daughter
Author:- Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

Many wonder what difference does upbringing make on children... On the learning path of "Letters of a Father to His Daughter" I can now make it out an answer to it... Wonder if I would ever be able to tell such complex things to my kid in such simple manner.... This was my Facebook status message while I was in the middle of this wonderful little book. I was thoroughly impressed with Mr. Nehru knowledge about the world history, this too expressed in letters to his ten year old daughter

The book is a collection of 30 letters written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru , the first prime minister of India to his 10 year daughter Indira Priyadharshini later Indira Gandhi, who also became the prime minister of the country during a summer in 1928.

The book is a true delight to read as a child with lot of excitement. Thank god I bought the original copy for this; I am going to keep it very safe for my kid. I would make sure he reads it when he is around 8 to 9 years old.

Coming to my favorite part of book, there were many. The letter “What is Civilization?” was so heart touching. The others include letter in which Mr. Nehru explained why man started sacrificing animals and imagined that he could stop the rain and hail like this. I also loved the fact that he let his daughter know that we worship god for a reason and not just its god.

Have you ever received or wrote letters? How did you like the book? Would you go ahead and read it after my thoughts on it? Write your heart/mind in comments section. I would be glad to read out your end of thinking on the book.
